Building Your First PC
Building your first PC can be a rewarding experience — follow these steps and you'll have a working system in no time.
-
Gather your components
CPU, motherboard, RAM, storage (SSD/HDD), GPU (optional for some CPUs), power supply, case, and cooling. For a starter build aim for $500–$800.
-
Prepare the motherboard
Install the CPU and CPU cooler on the motherboard, then insert the RAM into the correct DIMM slots. Double-check the CPU cooler orientation and that the RAM clicks into place.
-
Mount the motherboard and storage
Install the I/O shield into the case, then secure the motherboard to the standoffs. Mount your SSD/HDD and connect SATA or NVMe as needed.
-
Install GPU and connect power
If you have a discrete GPU, install it into the PCIe slot. Connect all power cables from the PSU to the motherboard (24-pin, CPU 8-pin) and GPU (6/8-pin) where required.
-
Cable management & final checks
Route cables for good airflow, check that all connectors are seated, and verify fans are plugged in. Close the case panels.
-
First boot & OS install
Connect a monitor and keyboard, power on, enter BIOS/UEFI to check component detection, set boot order, and install your operating system. Install drivers and Windows updates (or distro updates for Linux).
Enjoy your new PC! Upgrade components later as your needs change.
